Modal Singing Studio, led by Aram Kerovpyan, was established during the course of Teatr ZAR’s “Armine, Sister” project. The Studio’s work is based on Armenian liturgical chants which are learned by singing a drone and untempered intervals.
Between 2011 and 2013, a special training and vocal techniques were developed in collaboration between Aram Kerovpyan and Teatr ZAR members, which were then shared in VoicEncounters workshops. Currently we are seeking candidates interested in joining the Studio, who want to be initiated into the songs and to improve their modal singing skills.
The work has two aspects:
- vocal work that allows participants to discover a natural voice involving the whole body;
- modal work that begins by discovering natural intervals that are no longer heard in contemporary urban environments. Participants will learn to consider a melody within the framework of a mode, i.e. a sound environment rather than a succession of notes or motifs. Thus, they will be encouraged to discover the diverse intervals, and then the modes they constitute on the basis of natural tetrachords. Chants with limited lyrics will be taught in this perspective.
