Naves Matadero Madrid

Teatr ZAR will present in Madrid two performances: Armine, Sister and Medeas. On Getting Across together with workshops and an artistic installation created on a base of scenography and joint work by actors, singers and refugees.

Installation My Eye is my Country

This very installation is a result of performative process between actors and singers during creation of the first part of the Tryptych Anamnesis: Medeas. On Getting Across.

ZERO DOC – short  films made by refugees of themselves, of their stay here, after arriving to Europe are among the video materials we use in an installation.

The workshop introduces three-part polyphony, basing on the various musical scales of Georgian music, both folk and religious, and making use of basic musical formulas.

The work session focuses on an exploration into our own voices and our voices reflected and fused in the voices of others; on the strength of standing confident with the sound of our own voice, exploring its richness and building the foundation to support it – through breath, physical support, imagination; on discovering its strength when appearing singly, and its power when it adds to the richness of a common sound created by other voices.

Workshops led by Selda Öztürk

In this singing workshop I will share the voices and the stories of our mothers and grandmothers and you will learn songs in Kurdish, Armenian, Arabic, Turkish and Assyrian languages and you will learn some example of different rhythmic and musical forms such as laments, wedding songs, lullabies and work songs. I invite you to join in the journey towards these stories by singing.

Medeas. On Getting Across performance

Medeas is an unbroken sequence of actors’ actions and installations that coalesce into a poetic vision of rejection. The musical dramaturgy is built around Arabic, Persian and Kurdish songs sung by guest singers from Cairo, Tehran and Istanbul. Their voices are surrounded and contrasted with a sea of Latin confraternities.

Medeas is a music-based performance, but words are also present. Greek poet Dimitris Dimitriadis wrote a poem/choral for us called I Anthropos.

Armine, Sister performance

Armine, Sister not only reveals the history of the Armenian extermination, but also the history of silence and the responsibility for it. ­The work explores what it means to be a witness, and what witnessing means to us today. We cannot and do not want to speak on behalf of Armenians, but we wish our performance to break the chord of silence.
