Cultivating the ethos of group work, the Wrocław-based Teatr ZAR carries out artistic projects through long-term source searches, which are each time accompanied by the process of shaping a new theatrical language based on music from various traditions. The international composition of the team was formed during cyclical research expeditions to Georgia in 1999–2003. During these journeys, the group collected musical material, the essence of which are centuries-old polyphonic songs that go back to the beginning of our era and are probably the oldest form of polyphonic polyphony. “Zar”, from which the group takes its name, is the name of the funeral songs performed by the Swans living in the high regions of the Caucasus in northwest Georgia. The work of the ensemble stems from the belief that theater, contrary to the Greek thea – seeing, should not only be watched, but most of all listened to.
Teatr ZAR brings art from before the division into genres and styles, taking up themes seemingly reserved in the modern world for religion, acting in the belief that flows from Polish romantic thought that the tasks of art are not only complementary to religious movement, but can also fulfill the dynamic gap between everyday life and transcendence.
“Songs of the Spirit” – a concert of songs collected by the ZAR Theater during trips to Georgia (the traditions of the Gelati monastery and Svan songs) and to Corsica and Sardinia in 1999-2008, as well as original liturgical fragments of Eastern Christian churches. The music material of the concert is related to the performances of “Anhelia” and “Medeas”.
